Cooks need to be cautious when preparing for ThanksgivingPosted On Wed, November 10, 2010
Thanksgiving preparations include a lavish meal for most Americans. All the elaborate plans frequently involve spending more time in the kitchen than normal.
With the increased time in the kitchen can come a stronger chance of a fire developing. The National Fire Protection Association says most cooking fires take place on Thanksgiving.
NFPA vice president of communications Lorraine Carli says people need to be extra cautious while preparing many dishes.
"Thanksgiving is a holiday of feasting, but it's also a day of intense cooking, when stovetops and ovens are working overtime," says Carli. "These culinary activities bring an increased risk of fire particularly when people are trying to prepare several dishes while entertaining friends and family."
Fires can spread rapidly in a home and cause thousands of dollars in damage. Protecting one's investment with home insurance can help pay for repairs and replace destroyed belongings.
To help prevent a cooking fire, it's wise for cooks to not leave electrical appliances operating while unattended. It's also wise to keep a fire extinguisher within reach. Keeping safety in mind will help ensure an enjoyable holiday feast.
