Consumers shouldn't rely on tornado warning sirens

Posted On Fri, June 8, 2012

Many of those residents of the area called "Tornado Alley" rely on warning sirens more than they should, as the inaccuracies and better technology make them unsafe to depend on, according to the Insurance Journal.

Storm sirens are one of the most common ways that those in areas that frequently have tornado activity know that a storm is on its way. However, relying on a siren can be foolish, as these options run the risk of mechanical issues and are not typically heard inside modern homes due to insulation, the news source explained.

There are other ways that emergency management personnel and meteorologists have used to help people get information more reliably. This includes specialized weather radios, as well as weather alerts that go straight to consumers' cell phones, the news source said. However, many are still using sirens to get the message across. Even with that in mind, some experts are alright with these tools playing some role.

"I don’t think there's anything wrong with a community maintaining and improving their siren systems," Andy Bailey, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service, told the news source. "The public is not going to allow you to remove them, so I think your best course of action is to make them as modern and as reliable as possible. So communities that are investing and spending money in those sorts of things is actually a good thing, and they’re doing their part."

Those who don't take the necessary precautions to ensure they are prepared for a storm should do so before they put themselves in danger. Not only is it important to keep an eye out for multiple warning options, but ensuring that their home is protected is also smart. By looking for strong home insurance quotes, a person can be certain that their home will be covered if it is severely damaged in a storm.
