Consumers should examine healthcare options

Posted On Mon, November 7, 2011

A recent announcement from the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance encouraged consumers to examine health insurance quotes during the open enrollment period, which recently began.

The period allows for consumers to look over their current health insurance plan, while seeing what other options are available from independent, private companies, or even from an employer, the agency noted in the announcement. In addition, there may be incentives available from a person's employer, such as extra perks for living a healthy lifestyle. This could save a consumer even more money.

"If your employer offers you a choice in health options, now is the time to decide if you have the right coverage in place," said Mike Consedine state Insurance Commissioner. "Do a cost-benefit analysis and consider any changes in your family and its medical needs."

One of the best ways to check to see how viable a plan is may be to look over disaster scenarios, the department added. This will show how much someone would have to pay in a really tough spot.

Consumers who are unhappy with the cost of their plan can also check to see if there are lower health insurance rates available which don't compromise on the level of care.
