Consumers may need more than home insurance during a movePosted On Thu, August 13, 2009
A Minnesota newspaper columnist is reminding consumers that one time their home insurance policy may not protect them is during a move.
Writing in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, John Ewoldt says that home insurance policies generally only protect consumers during a move if a moving van gets into an accident or is damaged by wind or something similar.
Ewoldt was offering general advice for consumers who are planning a move. Among his points are to get at least three bids from moving companies, and that consumers should consider packing their own breakables. People who receive a box that is crushed should ask the moving team's leader to open the box on the spot to inspect for damages.
Another tip he offers in the column is to get supplemental liability insurance to help make sure potential damages on expensive items are covered.
In the current economy, many people have been moving because of problems with foreclosures or to take new jobs in other states. A growing number of people have also been taking advantage of lower prices in the current housing market, which is likely to further stir demand for home insurance.
