Consumers have many ways to save on home insurancePosted On Fri, September 4, 2009
Home insurance prices don't have to be unaffordable, even in a time of rising costs brought on by things like hurricanes and wildfires.
Recent tips from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners offer consumers a variety of different ways to cut down on the cost of a policy.
For example, the organization offers some widely cited tips such as raising a deductible, maintaining a good credit score and maintaining all insurance policies with the same carrier to qualify for discounts. The NAIC notes that raising the deductible to $5,000 can cut up to 25 percent from a premium cost.
Other ways that homeowners typically hold down their insurance costs include upgrading their security systems with things like smoke detectors and burglar alarms, while also taking steps to mitigate any disaster-related damage, such as reinforcing the roof and retrofitting the building to better withstand earthquakes.
Finally, people are also encouraged to check with their home insurance provider to see if they qualify for any other discounts, such as for senior citizens, membership in a certain organization or profession, or other such things.
