Consumers have difficulty accessing healthcare

Posted On Tue, February 14, 2012

A new survey from The Commonwealth Fund showed that low-income families may be struggling to get sufficient healthcare access.

Nearly 60 percent of low-income families of four earning less than $30,000 experienced a period of being uninsured during the past 12 months, according to the survey. Another 35 percent were without health insurance for two or more years. Middle-income families struggled, as well. Of those making roughly between $30,000 and $55,000, 36 percent were uninsured for a part of the past 12 months. Another 18 percent were uninsured for at least two years.

"People with low and moderate incomes run the highest risk of lacking job-based health insurance, are least able to afford health insurance on their own, and are the most at risk of not being able to afford care in the absence of coverage," said Sara Collins, vice president of The Commonwealth Fund and lead author of the report.

While affordability is an issue for some, it could be alleviated by comparing health insurance quotes. This could help a family gain coverage when they otherwise wouldn't be able to.
