Consumers advised to be educated about health insurancePosted On Mon, December 21, 2009
Consumers may be surprisingly uninformed about their health insurance coverage, according to a recent survey.
The recent data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners found that only 61 percent of consumers understand their rights when it comes to appealing a denied health insurance claim, while less than 33 percent under the cost factors that go into determining how much their premiums cost.
"By getting smart about their policies and tapping into the resources available, consumers will be more confident about their insurance choices and learn to make cost-effective decisions without sacrificing important coverage needs," said Roger Sevigny, president of the NAIC.
With these things in mind, the organization suggested that consumers need to conduct a coverage checkup, which means researching all coverage options and understanding the financial consequences of things like going to a doctor outside of one's network.
Also, consumers should check with their state insurance departments to understand more completely what their own state's policies require. Another tip was to take advantage of open enrollment periods to save money while making any needed changes to a policy.
