Consumer-driven health plan use on the rise

Posted On Tue, August 31, 2010

From high health insurance quotes to expensive medications, it seems as though health care costs keep moving upward.

Under health care reform, most Americans will be required to have health insurance. While the legislation helps extend coverage to people who may not have been able to obtain it otherwise, the rising cost of health care has yet to be stifled.

"In spite of passage of health care reform legislation, health care costs will continue to increase. There has been little coming out of Washington to date that addresses the underlying health care issues that can help control costs," said United Benefit Advisors member services vice president Bill Stafford.

One way employers are reducing their portion of health insurance costs is by using consumer-driven health plans. A survey released by UBA found that CDHPs grew more than 18 percent last year.

Stafford also believes employers will continue to "empower" their employees to make their own health care decisions. Advocates for CDHPs have typically said that the plans encourage employees to take better care of their health since they are in charge of monitoring their own costs. ADNFCR-2297-ID-19930442-ADNFCR
