Conservative organization suing to nullify health care billPosted On Wed, August 18, 2010
Four years from now, most Americans will be required to have health insurance or face being fined by the Internal Revenue Service. Healthcare reform was designed to expand coverage and make it more affordable. However, not everyone feels that the government should force people to get health insurance.
The Goldwater Institute from Arizona is filing a lawsuit against the government in an effort to prevent healthcare reform from completely taking place.
The case, referred to as Coons v. Geithner, is an attempt to stop Congress from exceeding its powers, according to the organization.
Small business owner and lead plaintiff Nick Coons says he has always been responsible in paying for his own medical care and wants to continue making medical decisions by himself.
Litigation director for the Goldwater Institute Clint Bolick asserts that the healthcare bill violates people's civil liberties.
"The federal health care bill is a sledgehammer to solve a problem that needs the precision of a scalpel," said Bolick. "This is the most overbearing and intrusive way possible to try to address America's rising health care costs."
