Congress passes final healthcare bill measures

Posted On Fri, March 26, 2010

On Thursday Congress passed the final package of changes to the national healthcare reform bill.

The final House vote tallied in at 220-207 and the Senate vote was 56-43. Like Sunday's initial vote, the approval of this bill came with not one single Republican vote.

The bill will now be sent to President Barack Obama for his signature.

“The American people have waited for this moment for a century,” Senate majority leader Harry Reid said while at a news conference.

There were outcries from particular interest groups that the health care reform didn't protect particular groups enough.

One example being insurance companies would not have to offer insurance to children with pre-existing health conditions. The final package of changes addressed this issue among others.

One issue that wasn't included in the changes packet was abortion. On Wednesday Obama signed into law an executive order banning the federally funding of abortions under the new health care reform law.

The New York Times reports the health care reform bill is the most far-reaching social legislation in nearly half a century.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19691823-ADNFCR
