Comprehensive auto insurance likely to cover fire damagePosted On Tue, September 8, 2009
Consumers who live in an area affected by wildfires will often find that damage to their vehicles is covered under comprehensive auto insurance, according to a leading industry organization.
The Insurance Information Institute recently noted that while media attention has been focused on wildfires in California, residents of many other states are potentially at risk for damage as well. This is because more homes have been built in woodland areas in recent years, raising the risk of property damage from wildfires in the process.
Other states with a significant risk of damage from wildfires include Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida and Arizona.
"If your community is threatened by a wildfire, your first concern is to protect yourself and your family. This means creating an evacuation plan and purchasing enough insurance to rebuild your home and replace all of your belongings in the event that they are completely destroyed," said the institute's president, Jeanne Salvatore.
Specifically, the organization noted that damage from fire and smoke is generally covered under comprehensive auto insurance, as is water and other damage brought on by firefighting efforts.
