Comprehensive auto insurance can guard against flood damagePosted On Wed, August 5, 2009
Drivers in Kentucky are getting some new insights into how important it can be to be ready for flooding when it comes to auto insurance policies.
Recent storms have led to serious flooding in the Louisville area, causing substantial property damage in the process.
With that in mind, radio station WFPL recently spoke with Kentucky's insurance commissioner, Sharon Clark, about how consumers can effectively protect their property.
According to Clark, not all policies necessarily cover against flooding. For auto insurance, such protection is generally available under comprehensive coverage, as opposed to other parts of the policy such as liability insurance.
"If people have comprehensive coverage, as opposed to liability, comprehensive coverage includes acts such as this. The deductibles, however, do apply. So, if they have had a vehicle that has been significantly damaged, they need to file a claim," Clark told the radio station.
Recent years have seen a significant number of floods and other weather events around the country, indicating that it is often a good idea to carry comprehensive coverage - especially on newer vehicles.
