Commissioner: Millions in insurance rebates still available to Louisiana homeowners

Posted On Thu, March 3, 2011

As much as $362 million in home insurance rebates is available in Louisiana and the state's insurance commissioner wants residents to take advantage of it through tax deductions and insurance premium discounts.

To make sure everyone is aware of the savings that can be had, the department is launching a statewide campaign that includes speaking tours at local organizations, media appearances and paid advertisements on area radio stations.

"If property owners have not yet claimed their citizens rebate, tax time is certainly a good time to do it," said the department's insurance commissioner, Jim Donelson.

Donelson went on to say that 63 percent of the money that's available has not been claimed. While people can still make claims on rebates that have gone unpaid going back to 2007, Donelson said there is a statute of limitations on when the money can be recovered. He said $133 million was not claimed in 2006 and the ability to claim that expired December 31, 2010.

In the wake of the BP oil spill that cost Louisiana homeowners billions of dollars in lost home value, the campaign will likely garner plenty of attention.
