Cleaning California's polluted air would result in better lives, savingsPosted On Mon, September 20, 2010
Pollution has been a growing problem and concern among many Americans. To help clean the country's air, a number of regulations have been implemented. A proposed "smart growth" plan in California is projected to prevent 140 premature deaths and more than 100,000 asthma attacks and respiratory symptoms a year.
The smart growth law would require better land use and more transportation options. Better city planning to include more walking and biking is also part of the plan.
American Lung Association of California senior policy director Bonnie Holmes-Gen says saving on commuting time helps the environment and will equate to more time with loved ones.
"Most Californians spend countless hours in traffic, precious hours that could be spent with family and friends," says Holmes-Gen. "With strong regional pollution targets, Californians have an opportunity to chart a new, healthier future."
In addition to enhancing the quality of people's lives, individuals may also find that they save on life insurance policies through their improved overall health. Research released earlier this year by the Rand Corporation says $193 million in medical costs between 2005 to 2007 were the result of patients being treated for pollution-related conditions in California.
