Cigarette legislation shown to be workingPosted On Fri, October 22, 2010
The "fire-safe" cigarette legislation is being hailed as one of the driving forces behind the decline in smoking-material fire deaths. The National Fire Protection Association says the number of deaths related to cigarettes and similar products have fallen to their second-lowest level in 30 years.
In recent years, a number of states have implemented laws requiring that cigarettes meet certain safety standards. Such regulations include that the products sold adhere to self-extinguishing guidelines.
NFPA vice president of communications Lorraine Carli says the laws have already helped increase safety.
"We are thrilled to see the intended consequences of fire-safe cigarette legislation," says Carli. "It is clear that the initiative has already made an impact on public safety and that further progress will be achieved over the next few years."
Despite the marked decline in smoking-material fire fatalities, people should still be concerned about the potential for a blaze. In addition to purchasing life insurance, there are a number of ways people can protect themselves.
In addition to being mindful of cigarettes, people should also be careful when using electrical devices. The Massachusetts Department of Public Safety says one sixth of space heater fires result in someone dying.
