Chronic diseases and stress may be relatedPosted On Tue, January 17, 2012
More Americans may be dealing with chronic diseases due to stress, according to a study from the American Psychology Association.
The APA's study, "Stress in America: Our Health at Risk," showed that one-fifth of Americans witnessed extreme levels of stress. However, more than 30 percent of consumers think stress does not have an effect on their own health, while 36 percent said it does not have an effect on their mental health, specifically.
The study noted that many people who experience stress actually end up with chronic illnesses due to their inability to deal with their issue.
"It is critical that the entire health community and policymakers recognize the role of stress and unhealthy behaviors in causing and exacerbating chronic health conditions, and support models of care that help people make positive changes." said Dr. Norman Anderson, psychologist, chief executive officer and executive vice president for APA.
Consumers who deal with chronic illnesses may be paying for higher health insurance rates than they think. It could be a good plan to compare health insurance quotes online to be sure.
