Children urged to walk or bike to schoolPosted On Wed, April 28, 2010
Working in accordance with First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is encouraging students to walk or bike to school.
On Friday while at an Indianapolis elementary school, LaHood announced the Safe Routes to School Program, which will help ensure that children have a safe way to bike or walk to school. This program works with the First Lady's program to encourage healthy activities for America's children.
U.S. Representative Andre Carson said that "in Indianapolis and cities across the United States, many parents are just looking for a safe way for their kids to get outdoors and exercise. Through the Safe Routes to School program, we have an opportunity to give our kids a safe environment through improved infrastructure and education programs where they can develop healthy habits that they will carry with them for life."
Carson also noted that one in three kids in the U.S. are struggling with their weight. The new program operates walking school bus routes that encourage students to bike or walk to school with parent volunteers acting as supervisors.
