Changes coming to Medicare plansPosted On Wed, September 14, 2011
A recent report by Allsup outlined the modifications coming to Medicare, which will change for the new cycle this fall.
The new Medicare rules were altered under the Affordable Care Act. This changed the annual open enrollment period, which is now from mid-October to the first week of December. This is earlier than the previous schedule, which was mid-November through the end of December. During this time, consumers are able to change the aspects of their Medicare plan, such as supplemental coverage, prescriptions and Medicare Advantage.
"With this change, people will have an easier time seeking healthcare when January arrives, since Medicare will have more time to confirm coverage for 2012," said Adrienne Muralidharan said. "In the past, some people with Medicare had to pay out-of-pocket for care at the start of the year because enrollment went through Dec. 31."
Many aspects of the new Medicare plans have fees raised, which may make it more expensive for most consumers, the report noted.
Consumers who may be unhappy with their Medicare situation may be better off looking at health insurance quotes from privatized companies.
