Cereal doesn't have to be sweet for kidsPosted On Tue, December 14, 2010
A study from the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University reveals kids actually like cereal that is low in sugar.
For the study, researchers gave children between the ages of 5 and 12 an option to eat one of three high-or low-sugar cereals. The children reported liking both breakfast options.
Furthermore, the children who consumed low-sugar cereals got more of their calories from fresh fruit.
Study lead author Jennifer Harris says children will make smarter food choices when the option is presented to them.
"These findings show that children will eat low-sugar varieties of cereals. And parents can make these options even more nutritious by adding fresh fruit to the bowl," says Harris.
Most professionals recommend eating breakfast on a regular basis. Starting children off on the correct path of eating a proper diet may yield significant health and financial benefits later in life. Those who don't have medical conditions don't have to see the doctor as often and frequently receive better life insurance rates.
