Careless driving can drive up auto insurance costs and cause tragediesPosted On Tue, September 29, 2009
People who want to avoid legal troubles and high car insurance premiums can start with exercising proper caution around bicyclists.
Recent media reports offer a glimpse of the tragedies that occur when bicycles and cars are involved in accidents. In Vancouver, Washington, a local high school teacher was killed while riding his bicycle home earlier this month. And in Ohio, a 13 year old boy was killed after a collision with an auto, also this month.
People can also visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website for more information on how dangerous the road can be for cyclists and drivers when either are careless.
According to the government agency, 698 cyclists were killed in road crashes in 2007, and 44,000 were injured. This amounted to 2 percent of all traffic fatalities, as well as 2 percent of all traffic injuries.
The NHTSA did note that traffic fatalities involving bicycles did fall 14 percent in 2007 from the 814 recorded in 1997. The agency also added that the highest number of cyclist fatalities on record was 1975, when 1,003 were killed.
