Caregivers put health on the line for their jobPosted On Fri, April 27, 2012
A recent report from Harris Interactive and the American Academy of Family Physicians showed that many caregivers have to deal with health issues when in assisted living situations.
The report for March showed that close to 90 percent of caregivers deal with at least one stressor when doing their job. In addition, 72 percent said that their work takes a toll on their health. Another 60 percent noted that their ability to sleep soundly has declined, as well.
"This age of instant information is a boon and a challenge for caregivers," said Dr. Glen Stream, president of the AAFP. "Caregiving can be a challenge as new health issues develop and a loved one's needs change."
The report also noted that more than half of caregivers have been forced to forego taking care of themselves, to some degree. These respondents said that their family lives have been affected by the work, as well.
If a caregiver has to give up their job in order to take care of a loved one, it may be a good idea to pick up a private health insurance plan. One way to do this is to find a policy with affordable health insurance rates.
