Car insurance company encourages teens to be safePosted On Tue, October 26, 2010
Teenage motorists frequently pay higher car insurance premiums because they lack experience behind the wheel. Furthermore, young drivers tend to get into more accidents and engage in dangerous behaviors while driving.
American Family Insurance is teaming up with Mindshare and MTV to help teens and their parents openly discuss the importance of being a good, safe motorist.
American Family vice president of marketing Lisa Bacus says more efforts need to be made to reduce the number of teen fatalities from driving.
"This campaign addresses the issue at the foundation, creatively reaching out to young drivers and their parents to have conversations that can be life-savers in the formative driving years," says Bacus.
So far, more than 9,000 families have taken part in the Teen Safe Driver program.
For parents and teens who don't have an open dialogue, there are monitoring devices that can help ensure safety. New York's Department of Motor Vehicles, for example, has a program where guardians can be notified of driving infractions their young motorist makes. Such a tool can be helpful in ensuring teens don't drive recklessly.
