Candles a leading home insurance and safety concernPosted On Wed, December 23, 2009
One of the biggest threats facing consumers from a home insurance perspective is the risk of fire. With that in mind, safety experts are warning that the holiday season can present a variety of safety concerns such as improper use of candles.
This week, Safe Kids USA and the U.S. Fire Administration announced that candles were responsible for about 15,600 house fires nationwide in 2005, and that about 450 children under age 14 die in such fires in any given year. With that in mind, some basic safety tips for the season include never leaving candles unattended and never using lit candles to decorate things like wreaths and Christmas trees.
"Make sure your smoke alarms are working and that your children can hear them while they are sleeping; make and practice a home fire escape plan; and follow basic safety tips regarding holiday decorating," added U.S. Fire Administrator Kelvin Cochran in the announcement.
However, candles aren't the only safety threat that typical homeowners deal with during the winter months. For example, frayed wires on holiday lighting displays are a serious fire hazard, as are Christmas trees that are allowed to dry out too rapidly.
By exercising fire safety year round, people can protect their family members while also avoiding any unwanted home insurance claims.
