Californians urged to prepare for wildfiresPosted On Fri, May 7, 2010
On Wednesday, in remembrance of the one-year anniversary for Santa Barbara's Jesusita Fire, California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner urged all homeowners to get ready for wildfire season.
The Jesusita Fire resulted in $17 million of damage and 8,733 acres burned, according to the county of Santa Barbara's website. Nearly 100 homes were destroyed or damaged, and 30 firefighter were injured.
Poizner said that "today is a difficult reminder that Californians must always be prepared for wildfires. Waiting for a fire to erupt before conducting a home inventory and reviewing your insurance policy means you could get burned twice - first by the fire then by trying to recover your losses." Homeowners are urged to update their home insurance policies in the event a wildfire occurs.
When conducting a home inventory, Poizner suggests residents keep a thorough record of their belongings. People should take pictures of possessions, write down their monetary value, and label photographs with relevant information. When recording video, someone should be providing commentary throughout the footage.
If a person's home insurance policy doesn't cover wildfires, additional coverage can usually be purchased.
