California wildfires should remind homeowners to update insurance policy

Posted On Fri, September 11, 2009

Although many homes in California were damaged because of this year's wildfires, the area has yet to reach the peak of fire season, which means the state's homeowners need to prepare and make sure their home insurance policy is updated.

The California Department of Insurance says homeowners in the state need to be proactive when preparing for wildfires and other natural disasters which can potentially damage their home. State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner encourages residents to make sure their home insurance policy is up-to-date in order to protect their investment.

"Waiting for a fire to erupt before conducting a home inventory and reviewing your insurance policy means you could get burned twice - first by the fire then by trying to recover your losses," he said. "These are concrete steps all Californians can take today to protect their homes and belongings."

Poizner encourages homeowners catalogue all their possessions in case of a disaster. He encourages the use of a digital camera, especially for items difficult to describe on paper and says homeowners using a video camera should have a running commentary of the documentation.

In order to keep all of this documentation safe, Poizner suggests placing it along with receipts and model numbers in a safety deposit box.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19358372-ADNFCR
