California insurance department recovers $63 million

Posted On Wed, March 16, 2011

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, auto insurance complaints are among the most common. But that's likely not the case in California, as the department of insurance has saved consumers millions.

According to Commissioner Dave Jones, the California Department of Insurance recovered $63.8 million for consumers after conducting investigations into insurance companies' market conduct.

"Our goal at the Department of Insurance is to be the best consumer protection agency in the nation," Jones said. "I'm proud to announce that our hard work has led to us recovering more than $63 million for consumers for calendar year 2010. Through our consumer complaint services and our market conduct exams, we will continue to be responsive to the needs of consumer and proactive in looking for any and all activities that hurt policyholders."

Earlier this month, insurance corporations, consumer advocacy groups, local governments and non-profit entities participated in National Consumer Protection Week. Around the country, organizations fielded questions and complaints from consumers so that greater customer satisfaction can be achieved.

The week was kicked off by President Barack Obama's Consumer Protection Chief, Elizabeth Warren, visiting the Anacostia HOPE Center in Washington, D.C. to discuss a variety of topics with consumers and community leaders.
