California insurance commissioner urges residents to consider homeowners insurancePosted On Tue, August 31, 2010
For many people their home is their biggest and most expensive asset. Some people have saved all their money so one day they could say they are a homeowner. All of that hard work can be taken away in the event of a natural disaster, which is why it's so important for people to have homeowners insurance.
With more days of warm summer weather ahead and the one-year anniversary of the Station fire, California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner is urging homeowners to protect their houses.
United Policyholders executive director Amy Bach urges homeowners to be upfront with insurance companies.
"When buying insurance, take the time to describe your home in detail and answer the insurers' questions so they have a clear picture of what you have and what you need," said Bach. "Raise your deductible to keep your premium down without sacrificing coverage."
To help determine how much homeowners insurance a person needs, the Insurance Information Institute says people need to make sure they have enough to replace their home as well as their personal possessions and liability to others.
