California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger supports health care reformPosted On Fri, April 30, 2010
On Thursday, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that he supports the national healthcare reform bill.
Schwarzenegger sent a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius saying that he intends to collaborate with the federal government in order to bring about a temporary health insurance program for the state's residents. Those who are uninsured with pre-existing medical conditions will be able to take advantage of this program.
In 2007, Schwarzenegger proposed a comprehensive healthcare reform plan for California, the largest state in the continental U.S. No Republicans voted for the federal Affordable Care Act, and the governor's support of the legislation is sure to stir things up among other party members.
Sebelius, the former governor of Kansas, is very pleased with Schwarzenegger's decision. "I appreciate the governor's dedication to strengthening the healthcare system and the governor deserves credit for his proactive work to help improve public health and prevent disease and illness," Sebelius said. "We are working carefully but expeditiously on the national level to implement the Affordable Care Act, and in the month since the President signed it, we've made significant progress in protecting consumers, expanding coverage, and lowering costs."
The healthcare reform bill was passed in March.
