California Assembly passes new health insurance bill

Posted On Thu, June 3, 2010

Those with health insurance may be at the mercy of their insurers when it comes to rate hikes, but that soon may no longer be the case in California.

The California State Assembly passed a new bill yesterday that drastically changes the way insurance companies can increase their rates, the Fresno Bee reported. The bill would require all increases in premiums, co-payments or deductibles by insurance companies to be approved by the state's Department of Insurance or Department of Managed Health Care before implementation.

The report said that the bill was in response to a proposed premium increase of up to 39 percent from Anthem Blue Cross that the insurer has since abandoned.

California already required such state approvals for all hikes in rates from auto, property and casualty insurance companies, according to the Bee.

This is just part of a number of sweeping changes to California's health care system. The AP says that more than 20 bills have been introduced by the state's legislature and as many as a dozen will be voted on this week alone as the bills approach deadlines.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19817360-ADNFCR
