Blind spots can contribute to accidents and auto insurance ratesPosted On Tue, August 18, 2009
Safety engineers may be able to hold down auto insurance rates and accident statistics in the future with advances that will help eliminate so-called blind spots.
According to a report on a New York Times blog, Ford has developed the Blind Spot Information System, which uses radar in the rear quarter panels to search for objects that may be unseen near one's vehicle.
However, the article adds that instead of spending more than $1,500 on such a system, drivers may also be able to make themselves safer simply by adjusting their mirrors the correct way.
The blog goes on to say that a driver can set their mirror in a way that allows a vehicle to be visible in the side view mirror before leaving the rear view mirror and then going on to appear in the driver's peripheral vision.
Blind spots can be a significant factor in many accidents - enough so that by dramatically cutting down on this factor, consumers could be able to enjoy lower auto insurance rates and stronger safety results overall.
