Bill to reduce insurance rates in Michigan fails
Posted On Fri, October 30, 2009A Michigan state senator is lambasting Republicans for defeating a bill she presented that related to home and
auto insurance.
Senator
Martha G. Scott, who is a Democrat from Highland Park, presented the bill,
which would have barred insurance companies from taking where a person lives into account when determining auto and
home insurance rates.
Scott said that rather than give her bill consideration
in a committee, Republicans in the senate moved to have it voted on immediately, which led to its defeat. Scott vowed to continue to fight for lower insurance rates for
people in the state.
"If we are going to require that every driver carry auto insurance then we need to make sure that the rates they are charged are fair, and
right now these rates are anything but fair," Scott said.
Citing statistics from Michigan Auto Theft Prevention Authority, Scott noted that even though auto thefts
fell 14.2 percent in Detroit from 2006 to 2007, auto insurance cost still have not decreased.
Despite the fact that Scott's measure failed, there are ways for
people in the state to try and get cheaper auto or home insurance. Consumers may consider bundling their policies with one provider, which could lead to savings.
