Bicycle checkpoints set up throughout DelawarePosted On Wed, June 15, 2011
Though gas prices may be falling, many citizens around the country are still keeping their cars in park and taking their bikes to get around. This is especially the case in Delaware, as the Associated Press reports numerous checkpoints are all around the state.
Jim Westoff, spokesman for the Delaware DOT, told the AP these stations are mainly there for people who are new to cycling.
"It is the inexperienced cyclists who seem to be more at risk [to accidents]; the people who ride 100 miles a week already understand how to ride safely," said Westoff. He went on tell the news service that each checkpoint has an attendant to answer cyclists' safety questions.
"A little education … that is saving lives," said Westoff.
The AP says a local bicycle retailer, Sussex Cyclists, teamed with the DelDOT in bringing approximately 15 checkpoints to the state in 2007.
With Bicycling Safety Month being this past May, much of the campaign revolved around precautionary measures, such as wearing a helmet and obeying traffic laws. The Insurance Information Institute used the month to remind riders that people who want to insure their bicycles can do so under a home insurance policy.
