Be safe at the gym while fulfilling New YearÂ’s resolutionsPosted On Thu, December 31, 2009
With 2010 representing the chance for a "fresh start" for so many people across the country, gyms will likely see a boost in attendance with those who have resolved to improve their health.
However, both gym rats new and old should be careful during their workouts and not over-do any exercises that could result in injuries and cause increases to health or life insurance premiums.
Megan Barclay, a physical therapist based in New York City, told the Associated Press people should be careful not to rely too heavily on ankle or knee support products to strengthen ailing muscles while working out. Unless a product is customized, most are designed for the general build of the body and may not properly adjust to specific contours of one’s body.
Additionally, when exercising Barclay suggested that goals be set that can be attained and do not put to much stress on one’s body.
"It is very important to set fitness goals and incorporate physical activity into your daily routine to manage stress levels," Barclay told the AP. "If time or finances prohibit you from going to the gym, find other ways to stay active such as taking a walk, running and even yard work or gardening."
For those looking for other ways to improve their health in the new decade, Barclay added that reducing chronic stress could also lead to lower blood pressure and an improved immune system.
