Battle over how to combat distracted driving continues

Posted On Thu, September 30, 2010

A battle between the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Highway Loss Data Institute has been brewing this past week. The two agencies have opposing views on the effectiveness of texting bans.

The DOT backs such laws, saying that far too many people die on the roads because of cell phone use. However, the HLDI recently denounced distracting driving laws, saying that texting bans haven't been shown to reduce accidents.

Nationwide Insurance is also voicing its position on the laws. The company's safety officer Bill Windsor say that while they don't want to see people involved in fatal accidents, more than just laws need to be set in order to save lives.

"Laws heighten public awareness of the problem, but without strong and consistent enforcement, those laws won't change driver behavior or save lives," says Windsor.

Furthermore, the insurance company is advocating for more education and advancements in technology to help fight distracted driving.

Given the fact that there is no clear way to stop accidents from happening, motorists should consider purchasing life insurance. The coverage will provide loved ones with financial support should the unthinkable happen from a run-in with a distracted driver.
