Back-to-school insurance tips

Posted On Mon, August 27, 2012

Students headed off to college this fall should make sure to cover all their bases when it comes to insurance.

The Associated Press has a few insurance tips for students and parents to remember before moving day.

First on the list is health insurance: does the student have full coverage? Most universities require students to have health insurance before enrolling. Although the student is most likely covered under a family plan until age 26, it's still a good idea to check the policy again to verify coverage. If the student isn't covered, insurance rates for individual plans are about $150 per month.

Next, if the student has a car, he or she should verify its coverage under an auto insurance policy.  Some insurance companies even offer "good student" discounts for students who maintain high grade point averages.

Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Mike Consedine advises students to take an inventory of their personal property for insurance purposes. Furthermore, Consedine advises parents to make sure their student's belongings are covered under their specific homeowners insurance policy, as coverage is not universal.

Finally, students going abroad for a semester should look into travel insurance. These policies can cover theft, accident, illness and other setbacks that can occur on foreign ground.
