Avoid tickets and auto insurance hikes: Drive safely around trucksPosted On Wed, September 30, 2009
Unsafe driving around 18-wheelers is more than just a good way to ruin one's car - it can also be a sure way to raise auto insurance rates and get a ticket.
With that in mind, a number of state law enforcement agencies have been taking action to crack down on drivers who tailgate trucks or engage in other aggressive and unsafe behaviors towards truckers.
According to KLAS-TV in Las Vegas, Nevada state police reported nearly 600 accidents involving trucks over the course of a year, with 43 fatalities. With that in mind, the state has reportedly launched a "Badges on Board" program where officers ride with some truckers to catch drivers who engage in reckless behavior when passing the rigs.
Alabama's Birmingham News reported on a similar program underway in that state which also features safety reminders mounted on the trucks. Police riding in the big rigs radio colleagues in unmarked cars, who proceed to pull over the offenders. That news outlet reported that 2,200 drivers have been ticketed so far under the program.
Overall, safety and courtesy on the road can save drivers money and increases in auto insurance rates, while also making them safer.
