Auto insurance tops consumer complaints in Massachusetts in 2010Posted On Thu, March 10, 2011
From issues involving foreclosures, loans and debt collection, consumer complaints ran the gamut in Massachusetts last year. But according to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, one complaint in particular was the most common: auto insurance.
According to the board, auto insurance was the most common complaint subject tallied last year, followed by health insurance and home-improvement contractors.
Other organizations' Boston chapters released their findings Wednesday as well. According to the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Massachusetts, automobile dealers were their top complaint targets. And for the Federal Trade Commission, debt collection was the number one gripe.
"Whether it is dealing with an insurance issue, questioning a debt collector or learning about a possible scam, consumers are often left with difficult and confusing questions in the marketplace," said Barbara Anthony, undersecretary of the OCABR. "This event helps educate and alert consumers to these issues."
Anthony was joined by other organizations' representatives in Boston at a press conference as part of National Consumer Protection Week. Consumer organizations throughout the country are offering people tips on how to prevent fraud and spot scams in the making.
