Auto insurance provider offers tips to combat distracted drivingPosted On Tue, November 24, 2009
From being distracted to feeling too tired to drive, there are a number of things that could impair a person's ability to drive safely, which could lead to higher auto insurance costs through an increased number of accidents.
Recently, insurance provider MetLife presented a questionnaire designed to test drivers on whether they are facing too many distractions as they get ready to take to the highway. For example, drivers should make sure they are keeping their focus on the road, rather than on cell phones or other distractions.
"Distracted driving is increasingly having an impact on lives lost and property damaged," Bill Moore, president of MetLife Auto & Home, said. "Safe driving is really about focus."
Though electronics provide their own distractions to drivers, being too sleepy can also be a problem. People need to be aware of the signs of fatigue, which include yawning and a having a hard time focusing.
MetLife is not alone when it comes to trying to advise drivers on the dangers of handling a vehicle while being distracted. Recently, the U.S. Department of Transportation held a two-day summit that focused on the problem. Along with discussions on how technology helps - and hinders - driving, the summit took a special look at the habits of younger drivers.
