Auto insurance industry group praises award recipientsPosted On Fri, August 14, 2009
A leading auto insurance industry organization has announced that two recipients of its top safety designation are hybrid cars.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, The Honda Insight and Toyota Prius, both 2010 models, earned its Top Safety Pick award, which requires tough tests focusing on a vehicles resistance to crashes and its stability. The institute also gave its award to the 2010 Kia Soul.
President Adrian Lund said that the institute's testing process "helps consumers distinguish between the best overall choices without having to sort through multiple test results."
While these small cars were hailed for their safety features, even smaller cars have been highlighted as being potentially unsafe because they tend to fare worse in crashes, especially serious ones with large vehicles.
Overall, consumers who take the time to find out which vehicles have the best safety records are less likely to be involved in accidents or to be injured by them. In turn, this can lead to lower auto insurance rates in general for the public as the overall costs of payouts, repairs and medical expenses become lower.
