Association gives free smoke alarmsPosted On Fri, October 29, 2010
One of the best ways a family can protect themselves and their home is with a smoke alarm. While the safety device tends to be relatively inexpensive, a number of houses aren't equipped with them.
Safety experts advice homeowners to install a smoke alarm outside of every sleeping area and on each floor. Having multiple devices will help ensure they are activated before a fire spreads too far and that everyone in a home hears it.
The Fire Equipment Manufacturers' Association and the Washington D.C. Fire and EMS are providing and installing free smoke alarms. Association president Jim Widmer says it's important for consumers to understand the importance of safety devices in all environments.
"While our member companies focus on the manufacture of commercial fire equipment, we realize that safety in the workplace must also carry over into the home," says Widmer. "That's why our goal is to raise awareness of the life-saving properties of a working smoke alarm, along with the benefits of all fire protection devices and systems."
Furthermore, smoke alarms may also help people save on home insurance. Many companies offer discounts for having safety features installed.
