Americans using healthcare from employers trended down in 2011Posted On Wed, February 15, 2012
A lower percentage of Americans used health insurance coverage from their employer in 2011 than they did in 2010, according to a poll from Gallup.
The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index showed 44.6 percent of Americans received health insurance from their place of work during 2011. This was slightly down from 2010's figure of 45.8 percent. Overall, 17.1 percent of Americans were uninsured during 2011, the highest point since 2008.
Another 25.2 percent of consumers were insured by a government plan, according to the poll. This includes Medicare, Medicaid and other benefits offered by the U.S. military. The figure was the same in 2010, but is still up from levels in 2009 and 2008. For those who don't work for the government, more than 57 percent received their insurance from their workplace. This has dropped notably in past years, as it was 64.2 percent in 2008.
Consumers who are uninsured, or don't receive a viable option from their employer, may want to compare health insurance quotes. This could ensure they find something that will help keep them protected in case of an illness.
