Americans not keen on paying for Medicare reforms

Posted On Mon, April 30, 2012

A recent poll from Harris Interactive showed that while a significant portion of Americans feel that Medicare needs to be reformed, many are uncomfortable with footing the bill.

In total, 83 percent of consumers think that changes are necessary in order for Medicare to remain both affordable and practical, according to The Harris Poll. Also, 51 percent think that the program needs a significant revamp. However, 53 percent of Americans do not want higher taxes to pay for it, and another 60 percent said that higher out-of-pocket payments would be bad as well.

"There's a clear majority who think there is a problem that needs to be addressed, but [people also believe] if the changes are going to cost me money in terms of higher co-pays, higher deductibles or higher taxes, no thank you," said Humphrey Taylor, chairman of The Harris Poll.

If a person is unable to pay for their government-sponsored healthcare option, it could be easier to afford a different policy. One way to find out could be to compare their current plan with other health insurance quotes.
