Aluminum wiring leaves some Florida homeowners lacking insurance

Posted On Tue, March 15, 2011

A potential fire hazard may wind up costing Florida homeowners their home insurance if they doesn't fix the problem.

According to the Pensacola News Journal, many Florida insurance companies are pulling their coverage from homes where aluminum branch wiring is used in electrical circuitry. Because the replacement costs are unaffordable for many - between $7,000 and $20,000, according to estimates - it's leaving Florida homeowners without home insurance.

Even though the replacement costs would benefit his business, Mike McCombs of McCombs Electrical tells the paper the new policy isn't right.

"Aluminum wire is just as safe as copper wire if it's installed correctly," McCombs told the paper.

Thanks to McCombs' protestations, the paper reports some insurance companies may consider offering homeowners an alternative solution that will be much less costly. The solutions are wiring connections that makes aluminum wiring run cooler.

Prospective homeowners should consult with their real estate agent to find out if their home's electrical circuitry is copper or aluminum. Some companies may charge more in premiums for homes that use aluminum wiring.
