Adults need to ensure children are healthy

Posted On Mon, April 30, 2012

YMCA of the USA noted that one-third of American children are obese, and parents are not doing enough to ensure that their children are healthy.

The YMCA's second annual Family Health Snapshot showed that fewer than one-quarter of parents prioritize physical health as the most important thing for their children. Education was ranked close behind at 20 percent. Four in 10 Americans noted that they need to help their children get more physical activity. Fewer than 19 percent of children go outside and play for at least one hour each day during the school year.

"Summer weight gain and summer learning loss often go unnoticed, but they impact many of today's youth," said Dr. Matt Longjohn, senior director of chronic disease prevention for Y-USA. "Some studies have shown that children's BMI increases nearly twice as fast during the summer than during the school year."

Those parents who don't think that their children are in good enough shape may want to speak with a professional on the matter. If they lack sufficient healthcare, it could benefit them to look for health insurance quotes to rectify the situation.
