Abuse victims may face a lifetime of doctor's visitsPosted On Tue, July 13, 2010
Victims of sexual abuse may find that they need a lifetime of psychiatric therapy. People who find themselves in frequent need of medical assistance will want to make sure they have a health insurance plan that is affordable and meets their needs.
Research conducted by the Mayo Clinic reveals that regardless of age when the abuse occurred, victims are more likely to have attempted suicide and suffer from stress disorders, anxiety and depression.
"Survivors of sexual abuse are commonly seen in general medical practice," says Dr. Ali Zirakzadeh. "Sexual abuse survivors face a challenging spectrum of physical and mental health symptoms, which results in high health care utilization, oftentimes without improvement in quality of life."
The number of sexual abuse victims may be higher than people think, as the violent act can happen to a person at any age. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that a nationwide survey of nearly 10,000 adults revealed that over 10 percent of women and 2 percent of men said they were forced to have sex.
