Mississippi Health Insurance Regulations
If an individual in Mississippi is obtaining medical insurance through an employer, he or she cannot be denied coverage under that health plan, nor can that coverage be limited. An individual attempting to purchase individual Mississippi health insurance, however, can be denied coverage by a Mississippi health insurance company or if a policy is granted, the coverage may be limited.
Pre-Existing Condition Regulations
Mississippi health insurance policies can contain pre-existing condition provisions and/or elimination riders. A pre-existing condition is one for which and individual has been diagnosed or treated during the 12 months prior to the beginning of the new Mississippi health insurance plan. The new policy can refuse to cover costs of the pre-existing condition for up to 12 months. Mississippi health insurance policies may also include elimination riders which permanently exclude a specific medical condition from coverage under the plan.
Renewability Regulations
All Mississippi health insurance policies are guaranteed renewable and any individual wishing to renew coverage under an existing policy is guaranteed the right to renew their existing Mississippi health insurance policy. Mississippi health insurance rates, however, can change from policy to policy depending on the age and health of the individual. No health insurance policy in Mississippi can be cancelled or refused renewal based on health.
Newborn Regulations
All newborns are protected under their parent’s individual Mississippi health insurance policy provided that the policy covers dependents. This coverage lasts for the first 31 days after birth, after which the policy needs to be adjusted. Disabled dependents may continue to remain under the parent’s health insurance past the usual age at which dependents are no longer covered.
For those between health insurance plans or between employment, temporary Mississippi health insurance is available for those that qualify.
Alternative Mississippi Health Insurance Options
For individuals who are unable to gain access to Mississippi medical insurance or who might otherwise be considered “uninsurable”, the state has programs which may help:
- Mississippi Medicaid is available for qualified individuals who meet the eligibility criteria.
- Mississippi Comprehensive Health Insurance Risk Pool Association is the state’s high-risk pool that allows individuals who might otherwise be considered “uninsurable” to gain access to group health insurance. Pre-existing condition exclusion periods may apply.
- Mississippi Children’s Health Insurance Program is designed to provide health insurance to children up to age 19 whose families may not otherwise qualify for Medicaid and who may not be able to purchase Mississippi health insurance.
