Utah Auto Insurance

In auto insurance jargon, Utah is what is referred to as a "no fault" state. What this means is that Utah auto insurance policies must have protection for individuals regardless of who is at fault in the event that an accident takes place. Utah drivers must also carry liability coverage to operate a vehicle.

Utah Auto Insurance Requirements

Utah requires liability insurance minimums of 25/50/15. When a car accident happens, the liability coverage pays out at least $25,000 for bodily injury to an individual, $50,000 for all bodily injury expenses, and $15,000 for any property damage.

In addition to liability coverage, all drivers must have underinsured and uninsured motorist bodily injury protection with minimums of 25/50. If a driver hits you without proper insurance, this coverage will pay out $25,000 for bodily injury to one person and up to $50,000 for all bodily injury expenses.

The "no-fault" part of the insurance coverage is the mandatory personal injury protection (PIP) coverage. The PIP helps pay for medical expenses regardless of who was at fault (only when amounts exceed the liability limits). It also provides coverage for loss of wages, loss of services, and funeral expenses.

Utah drivers also have the option of purchasing comprehensive and collision coverage for their vehicle. These types of insurance provide additional coverage specifically for your property and are recommended if you own a more expensive vehicle. They are also required if you lease your car or if you are making payments to a financing institution.

Utah Auto Insurance Rates

Auto insurance prices in Utah are near the national average. Prices for the state currently rank 29th in the country overall, with an average expenditure of $732 per driver. A recent study showed that Utah drivers spend on average $438 per year for liability coverage, $280 for collision protection, and $129 for comprehensive coverage.

The method for determining Utah auto insurance rates varies slightly from one company to the next. Pretty much all companies spread out average statewide costs to all drivers who purchase an insurance policy. This means that a significant portion of your premium will be determined by factors out of your control, such as the total that a company pays to resolve lawsuits, total traffic accidents in Utah, and even corporate tax rates.

The other major set of variables used to determine rates are all based on your individual traits, many of which you can affect. Though there is little you can do about where you live, your age, or your gender (all of these have an impact on your rates), you can control your driving record, your credit score, and to some degree, the type of car you drive.

Licensed Insurers in Utah

Utah drivers have many options when it comes to selecting an auto insurance company. Utah providers offer everything from cheap auto insurance with lower quality of coverage to very expensive insurance and great service. Picking the company that is best for you can be difficult, so you should always shop around to several auto insurance companies before you make a decision.
