New Hampshire Auto Insurance

Regarding auto insurance, New Hampshire is what is referred to as a tort state. This simply means that when a traffic accident occurs, one of the parties involved will generally be judged "at fault" and that individual will be required to pay for any damages resulting from the accident. Because New Hampshire auto insurance operates under a tort system, the state laws specifies that all all drivers must purchase three types of coverage as safeguards:

  • Basic liability coverage
  • Underinsured and uninsured motorist bodily injury protection
  • Medical expenses coverage

For more comprehensive information on the coverage requirements for auto insurance in New Hampshire, please see the section on rules and regulations below.

New Hampshire Coverage Rules and Regulations

New Hampshire law requires minimum liability coverage limits of 25/50/25. That is shorthand for saying that all drivers must carry $25,000 per person injured, up to $50,000 for all injured, and $25,000 for any property damages caused by an at-fault accident.

In addition to the liability coverage, New Hampshire auto insurance requires drivers carry 25/50 coverage for their underinsured and uninsured motorist bodily injury protection. If you are struck by a driver without adequate insurance, this coverage would pay $25,000 per person injured and up to $50,000 for all parties who are injured. Both uninsured and underinsured coverage are required and both must be at the same level.

Finally, New Hampshire requires all drivers to have at least $5,000 in medical expense coverage. This coverage will pay for general medical expenses caused by an accident and in some cases may pay out for lost wages as well.

New Hampshire Auto Insurance Premiums

New Hampshire is near the national average when it comes to auto insurance premiums. A recent national survey ranked New Hampshire at the 22nd most expensive state in which to purchase car insurance coverage. On average, New Hampshire drivers spent $776 in total annually for their coverage, $415 on basic liability insurance, $300 on collision coverage, and $115 for comprehensive coverage.

New Hampshire auto insurance companies calculate rates in different ways, but there are some basic variables that are always used when determining premiums. Some of these variables are based upon statewide statistics for which the driver has not control. Others are influenced by individual traits of the driver.

The statewide costs associated with New Hampshire auto insurance rates include the basic costs of doing business, such as taxes and legal fees, along with other broad risk factors. These risk factors may include the number of claims being filed against the insurance companies as well as the number of traffic accidents in the state for a given year. Unfortunately, none of these factors can be influenced by individual drivers, so there is a certain amount of risk you will have to pay for even if you never have an accident and never file a claim.

The individual risk factors are much more controllable for individual drivers. While some may be set in stone - like your age and gender - others can be easily influenced by individual behavior and decisions. Some examples include the type of car you driver, the safety features you select, your credit rating, and most importantly, your driving record.

Because auto insurance premium calculations are so complex, it is often the case that different insurers may offer very different rates for the same driver. For this reason, it is highly recommended to check rates from multiple carriers often.
