Maryland auto insurance has many requirements and regulations associated with it. The State requires minimum liability coverage, personal injury protection (PIP), and uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage. In Maryland, auto insurance is mandatory and you must present proof of insurance to any peace officer or sanctioned officer of the State of Maryland when requested.
Maryland Auto Insurance Laws and Regulations
In the State of Maryland, liability minimums are 20/40/15, meaning drivers must purchase at least $20,000 in coverage per person injured, $40,000 for all injured, and $15,000 for any property damages caused by an accident for which they are at fault.
Every driver is also required to have personal injury protection coverage of at least $2,500, unless they have health care which provides similar coverage. Even though they may have health care to cover some costs, it is advisable to carry the PIP coverage for other passengers who may be in the vehicle during an accident.
Maryland also requires 20/40/15 worth of coverage for uninsured motorist bodily injury protection. This coverage means the insurance company will pay out $20,000 for one person, $40,000 for all injured, and $15,000 for any property damages, when the at-fault driver doesn’t have insurance or is underinsured.
Maryland Auto Insurance Rates
A recent survey of national car insurance rates showed that drivers in Maryland spent on average $890.86 throughout the year on coverage. These numbers ranked Maryland as the 15th most expensive states in the country. On average, a Maryland driver spent $524.39 for liability coverage, $313.50 for collision coverage, and $140.39 for comprehensive coverage.
How do insurance companies figure individual Maryland auto insurance premiums? Insurance companies first figure the cost to provide coverage to the entire state. This figure includes any expenses for legal fees and the previous year’s insurance payouts. Then they categorize drivers into risk levels by using factors such as age, location, type of car, marital status, and driving record. With this information, they determine your portion of the total cost to provide car insurance to the entire state.
Maryland Auto Insurance Companies
Many of Maryland's insurance providers calculate rates in different ways. For this reason, it is very important to get quotes from multiple companies or you might end up overpaying.
