Tennessee gets millions in flood recovery assistance

Posted On Fri, May 28, 2010

The state of Tennessee announced recently that it will be receiving $4,674,000 from the U.S. Department of Labor's National Emergency Grant in order to aid in recovery and clean-up efforts from the May flooding. Nearly $1.8 million of this funding will be given to the state immediately.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development will receive the grant money, which in addition to helping in the recovery effort, will created temporary jobs to assist in cleaning up the damage caused by the severe storms in May. The state experienced tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding, the U.S. Department of Labor said. Continued financial aid will be given as the state demonstrates that it is necessary.

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis said that "the images of Nashville under water have been heart-breaking. This grant will support ongoing recovery efforts and provide temporary employment to Tennesseans as they clean up flood-impacted areas and return their lives to normalcy."

Homeowners living in flood-prone areas should check their insurance policies to see if this sort of natural disaster coverage is provided. If not, they should ask their provider to add on this coverage in order to best protect their personal property.ADNFCR-2297-ID-19808884-ADNFCR
